Help from experiened photographer on which DSLR to choose?

So I'm gonna buy my first DSLR. I've been wanting one for years now! I decided to go with a used Nikon D5000.
I need help from a very experienced photographer that knows their cameras. There are two, one is refurbished and the other is not but is still in great condition…

great condition: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...amera.html

Also can you please tell me in your opinion which one is better… The Nikon D5000 or the Canon 500D

What's the difference other than the MP?

Added (1). BTW I plan on using it for everyday things… Some amateur photo-shoots on the side, some landscape shoots, some portraits.

Very experienced photographers tend to know jack s.nothing about cameras in this class.

There's $10 difference between the two. Call 'm up, ask about warranty, 90 days is enough to discover any faults, and then pick one.

The difference… Well, here's a truely bizarre idea, read the reviews and discover it's mainly down to personal preference

I happen to be an experienced Canon user and I only recommend what I own and know - Canon.
I also happen to own a 500D and it's an excellent camera for both stills and video. Others prefer Nikon but actually it's a personal preference since there's very little difference between these two brands… So there's no "better". Different yes but not better.

B&H is a trustworthy site… I and most of the regulars here shop there often with no scams or problems. B&H always does exactly what they say they will do… No more, no less.

But buying used is always a risk… So I'd recommend re-furbished. This should include a 90-day warranty from Nikon. If it's refurbished by anyone else avoid it.

Any dslr camera from either Canon or Nikon will give you excellent service. I just happen to prefer Canon so that's what I recommend.

The one thing I would stress however is this. If you buy a dslr camera just because you believe it will improve you results - then don't. Most people who don't want to learn how to really use a dslr end up disappointed because their results are the same as they would be with a pocket toy… The reasons are simple. Using any camera on full auto will give you the same results. To really improve your shooting and the results you must (emphasis on "must") learn how to control the camera because on full auto a dslr, any dslr, is nothing more than a point and shoot. So if "snapping" is your aim, then stick with a snapper's camera.

Often both B&H and Adorama offer a 1yr store warranty for a factory refurbished warranty - in addition to the typical factory warranty.

I've only had the D5100 for a few days, and I love it. I loved it out of the box. Before buying it,
I'd been considering the more expensive Nikon D7000 and the Canon EOS 60D. But being the type of guy who is in general very technology/gadget challenged, I knew I'd never use 90% of the available
features on either camera, so I couldn't really justify the extra expense.
