I'm starting photography in the spring and want to step up to a dslr. I'm looking at these models sony a35 $650/ a55 $660, Canon t2i $590, Nikon D5100 $710, Sony a580 $680

Which one of these has the best video quality?
which has the best photo quality?

i'm leaning toward the a580 but wondering if the video mode is on par with the a55/a35

I can't really tell you about any of these except the Canon T2i. I do know that they all have the capability to produce great pictures and picture quality isn't really gonna be far apart from each other as it is a DSLR and I assume that you're gonna be using Manual mode most of the time which allows you to basically have full control over the cameras functions (So if your pictures come out wrong, you're doing something wrong and not the camera). I just bought the T2i like a month ago and it's my first DSLR and it's really great and so is the video quality which can record vids up to 1080p @ 30fps. I originally wanted to go with SONY because they kind of seem like the underdog company. I was lookin at the A33 (Similar to the A35) but when I actually held it in my hand, the grip wasn't really comfortable and this is something that I would suggest doing. Go and find a local camera shop to go get a hands on experience with the camera because a lot of Sony Alphas do seem to be made for smaller hands. It might also help to do some research online and read reviews on each of these cameras you've narrowed your choices to. Here are some cites for reviews:
