Firework Photography Tips?
I recently got a Nikon D3100 and I really want to use it on 4th of July to take pictures of the firework show in my town so does anyone know any tips that will help me take good pictures of fireworks using a nikon D3100 and a 18-55mm lens?
As I have posted before, mess around a lot with shutter speed. This can add a feeling of motion or stillness. Also, if you want to get more artsy, use rule of thirds. This will explain the method way easier: http://en.wikipedia.org/..._of_thirds
What you need to do
* mount the camera on a tripod
* set the cameras shutter speed to bulb
* precompose the area of the sky where the fireworks will be bursting.
* set the lenses focus to infinity (manual mode)
* using a remote shutter release, open the shutter for as long as it takes for two or three bursts before closing the shutter
* use the lens aperture to adjust for the best colour saturation.
First of all, you need a tripod for good results. You will make out better if you have a cable release, but don't sweat it if you don't.
First, you need to decide if you want long trails or if you want to just capture the burst. For long trails, you need a one second or longer exposure. For just the burst, you need 1/8 to 1/4 of a second. With a digital camera, you can check results immediately, so start shooting as soon as you get there so you can see if you are getting what you want or if you need to make changes.
Go to my Flickr site and click on any examples that you want to copy and read the settings, which I have placed under most of the images.
