External flash for Nikon D80 camera?

I'm looking for a good flash for my camera that does not cost a lot but is not made cheap either. I have a Nikon D80 camera. Any ideas would be great!

Probably the best at this time is the new SB700.

Since you will only be buying one flash that will last over decades, save your money and buy a good one.

Your Nikon D80 has the ability to control Nikon compatible speedlights wirelessly (off camera) using the camera flash as a trigger. Compatible speedlights are (low price to high) the SB600 (£220), SB800 (discontinued, but you might get one secondhand) or SB900 (£320) and the new SB700.

These will allow you to do TTL (ie auto flash metered via the camera lens) both on or off camera.

They are expensive solutions though.

A better (and cheaper) way is to forget TTL and learn how to control a flash manually (it's not difficult). You'll have far more flash choices that way.

A good manually adjustable flash like the Yongnuo 560 (£60) can be used on camera (you adjust the flash power output manually - it goes from 1/1 to 1/128 power) an you can get a set of radio triggers (RF602) which will fire the flash off camera for £27.

On camera flash, even a speedlight will limit your creativity as it'll be an on axis light source. You'll be able to bounce it off (neutral) walls/ceilings) but much better to get it off camera to give you far more options.

Have a look at the Strobist blog - great resource for off camera flash;

The sb-600 I'd say. Yes, the 700 is a lot nicer but, most likely, more expensive still. 400 doesn't rotate which makes it, in my opinion, rather useless in my opinion.
