DSLR night photography?

I have a Nikon d3100 and I'm looking for a lens that will get me some nice results of the night sky- star showers etc. Is the 35mm f1.8 a good option, and how should I set up my camera in terms of ISO with night photography, I know aperture and exposure times etc, thanks so
Much

Just use the 18-55mm zoom lens that came with your camera. You'll definitely need a tripod and a locking remote release would be useful although you can make a 30 second exposure using the camera's self-timer.

Check out Jerry Lodriguss' site www.astropix.com
You'll find all of the information you need on astrophotography, and you can order his books on disc that will give you more info. A Guide to Astrophotography with Digital SLR Cameras is well worth the money.
