Do I really need to buy an extra 55-200mm lense?
So I'm saving up for my first DSLR camera, and I have been learning a lot about photography in the meantime. I have decided to buy a nikon d3100, and I'm not sure if I should buy a 55-200mm Lens also. I will be taking pictures of things at horse shows, horses and more outdoorsy stuff. No wild life besides horses though. My question is, will I really need that extra zoom, or is the 18-55mm enough? I would like to spend my money on other lenses also, so I want to know if the 55-200mm Lens is worth the money. (the nikon d3100 is 529$ with just the kit Lens. With that and the 55-200mm Lens bundle it is 749$. The lense itself is 179$ on amazon.com )
There's no way for us to answer this question for you. Unless you are going to be very close to the horses, 55mm will not be enough range.
55mm is nowhere long enough for shooting horses at a distance. The 55-200mm would make a nice addition, though whether or not its worth the money is up to you; you either get the pictures you wanted, or you don't.
It depends on how close you can get to the horses. This is all about angle of view. To give you an idea of what those mm can do for you, visit this link.
