Digital SLR camera choice?

I've only had a point and shoot digital camera before, and I'm looking for an upgrade digital SLR with more features that is fast and easy to use in different kinds of light, and produces great image quality. Nothing too fancy. I'd like to spend less than $650, although I'm sure I can find a low price for most kinds of cameras online.
So do you like:
Canon T1i Rebel
Nikon D5000

Or something else?

Added (1). Lenses? Please explain more.

You might also want to look at Nikon's D3100. Great little camera. The D5000 is a good camera as well. Either will give you many years of use.

I think you are a little low in your budget.

The T1i costs $750 and D5000 cost about $630 without a lens.

That said, for $700 you can buy a nice Nikon D3100 with a lens and can shoot Full HD video
