It is an older dSLR, but a good one.

Great starter DSLR and perfect for beginners to photography who want more than a point and shoot. Excellent value for money, it was Nikon's entry level before the (i think) D60.

Got one myself when I was in college (when it was brand new) and it suited me down to the ground. Don't use it so much now as i shoot mostly film and i have access to higher level camera's.

Depends what you're wanting it for really, if you're new to photography, you can't go far wrong with it. Handle's really well too, it's lightweight (i'm a small girly and it's perfect for me).

These guys are pretty trusted for reviews. Though this article is 4 years old so pay no attention to the price as it has dropped since.http://www.whatdigitalcamera.com/equipment/reviews/digitalslr/406/1/nikon-d40x-review.html

The D40x was an upgrade to the D40 and both are now long discontinued. The Nikon D3000 was their replacement and its latest upgrade is the D3100. As with all entry-level Nikon DSLRs only Nikon AF-S lenses will auto focus on these cameras.

In my opinion it would be worthwhile to look at the Pentax K-x and the Sony A33.

The Pentax K-x was chosen by the Technical Image Press Association as their 2010 "Best DSLR Entry Level".It has features not found on any comparably priced DSLR or on DSLRs costing several times more.

The Sony A33 uses Sony's translucent mirror technology which allows continuous auto focus right up until you release the shutter. Since the mirror never moves there's no image blackout when making a picture.

So expand your horizons and don't overlook the K-x or A33.
