Deciding what camera to get?

Hi! So I'm 14 and looking into getting a good camera! I really can't decide between the Canon SX40 HS or the Nikon D3100.

So I really want to get the Canon SX40 HS for a concert (since you can't bring a DSLR to concerts) but my brother is telling me not to because apparently anything lower than 14 megapixels "isn't good" but I like that it has full 1080p video, it has really great zoom (I have pretty far seats in the concert) and the screen is movable! The only drawback it the 12.1 megapixels I guess.

With the Nikon D3100 everything is great except for the screen doesn't move and I can't really bring it to the concert. Also I don't really know much about photography so I don't know if I'll be buying a bunch of lenses since I'm not a photographer and I don't plan to be so it'll probably be a waste to throw a bunch of money into it.

Okay but with the Nikon D3100 it'll take great photos, but will it be worth it and last?

What are your opinions?

I'd go for Canon. I've owned several Canon video and still cameras. Can't say a bad thing about them.

The Nikon is a fully adjustable dSLR and uses interchangeable lenses.

The SX40 is a P&S camera and has a sensor that is 15 times smaller than the D3100,

I'm sure you will be happier with the D3100

There's no reason to think that a D3100 will not last at least ten years or longer. You just have to be sure you don't drop it or abuse it in any way.

That camera will still be working long after you have upgraded to a new one due to advancements in technology

The D3100 is a great camera that can do almost anything. I think you are far better off with that camera. You are not going to get good shots at concert unless you are very close to the stage. Just go and enjoy the concert.

Both are great cameras and great companies. I've been shooting with Nikon for 30+ years, and partial to them.
