D60 lens 105mm vs 35mm?

I have to change the lens so I think between

AF-S DX 18-105 f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR
or
AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm F1.8 G

what do you think is better and why!

It would be helpful to know why you need to change the lens. Is your old kit lens broken or did you find it lacking in some way?

The 18-105 is obviously the much more versatile lens, the 35/1.8 on the other hand is better in low light but doesn't zoom at all. That's it, basically. Both have their specific use; which one is better for you depends on your preferences. I think that for 80% of all people it would be the 18-105 though (which isn't all that bad in low light either, thanks to the VR)

The 18-105 is considered to be a bit expensive compared to other standard zooms though.

Edit: the 35/1, 8 s too wide for portraits, it'll produce an unfavorable perspective if one gets close enough to avoid excessive cropping.

This is a typical question that you can only answer yourself… It depends what you plan to use it for. If you are into potrait then go for the 35mm… It is f1.8 so you wil get nice out of focus backgrounds and be able to shoot in low light.

the 18-105 is a useful all rounder but isn't as fast as the 35mm.

however since your asking i'm going to say that the 18-105mm is better because you will be able to take a variety of shots

The 18-105mm is better if you are not concerned with picture quality and speed. It's a super zoom lens that is meant to be the single lens owned and used by the uninitiated photographer. In short, it's one for those who hate swapping lenses.

The 35mm is great for speed and low light. It's a prime lens so that means the glass is finely tuned to one focal length only producing the best possible picture you can get. Because it doesn't zoom, you would work harder and be more mindful of the picture's composition. 35mm is great for people shots, portraits. It has an angle of view that is close to human eyes. That's great for taking pictures of things you see with your own eyes as is.

Personally, between the two, I'd go for the 35mm f/1.8. If I need to go wide, I'd just step back a few paces. If I need go near, I'd walk towards the subject. I'm not shy but that would be me. You should know what you want and are capable of.
