Concert Photography Help! With Nikon D3100?
I have a Nikon D3100 and I've noticed that it isn't the greatest in low light situations. I do enjoy shooting pictures at concerts but my only lens isn't helping me out that much. I was wondering what kind of lens would be good for me to buy that would be able to perform well in low light and have a zoom? I also enjoy doing landscape and portrait.
Before you take your D3100 into a concert, make sure that you have that option. Most concert venues will not allow fully adjustable cameras such as your D3100
Just shoot at ISO 3200 and worry about any noise later in post. Shoot in RAW, since it will give you the most data to work with.
Landscape = AF-S 10-24 mm
Portraits = AF-S 50 mm
For a Nikon, the fastest zoom lenses you can get are the 14-24mm, the 17-55, the 24-70, the 28-70, and the 70-200, all at f/2.8. They are very expensive; if you can't swing those, then forget the zoom and stick with a 35mm or 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4. An 85mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 might also work well and would be good for portraits but not so good for landscapes.
I agree zooms are the best for concerts, but the fast ones are expensive and the slow ones are useless.
You also won't be able to bring those (or the camera itself) into most shows at mid-to-large venues without a pass.
