Choosing a lens for nikon d3100?
I have a nikon D3100 with an 18-55 lens. I want to buy a zoom lens. I'm choosing between 55-200 vr and 55-300 vr. The 55-200 vr is half the price of the other one. Which one should i get to combo with my 18-55. Should I buy the 55-200 and save 150 pounds for a 50mm? Answers please.
I bought the nikon d3100 and it came with the 18-55mm lens. I decided to go up to the 55-200mm lens and the pictures that i have taken with this lens is just amazing.super clean and easy to focus. I keep switching from indoor use with the 18-55mm to the 55-200mm out door lens but the one that stays on my cam 90% of the time is this lens.well worth the money i paid for it but i recommend ever one to get the 18-200mm lens at one time in there life not only is it 4x better but you would never have to take it off unless you want to put on the 35mm lens or a lens that goes up to 300mm and more.
The difference between 200 and 300 isn't THAT major. You can always crop. If going for the cheaper 55-200mm lens means you have money left over for an excellent 50mm lens, then go for it.
Both are great lenses but I think 55-200mm will do its job for the tele end. 55-200mm has already proven its worth and its cheaper.another thing is that you won't have to buy different filters since 18-55 and 55-200 shares the same filter thread. As for the 50mm, if you plan on getting the 50m 1.8D, you won't be able to use autofocus since your d3100 lacks a built-in motor. You are limited to lenses with built-in motor. I suggest you get the 35mm AF-S 1.8. That would be the real 50mm for DX bodies (35mmx1.5). If you really want the 50mm, you need to get the 50mm 1.4 AF-S to have autofocus.

Get the 55-300 without the VR and buy a monopod
