Like the title says, can you shoot video in black and white on the Nikon D3200? I know you can do B&L photos when you edit them on the camera but I can't find if you can shoot video in B&L.

Like the photos, you can later edit your video to appear B&W in programs like iMovie, Windows Movie Maker etc.

Actually it is better to shoot in RAW and then process your files in Lightroom. The depth of the black and white files derived from a RAW file will be much better than shooting in the B&W mode. What that should mean it tha the same is true when shooting video.

Do the black and white conversion in post

NOTE: What is a B&L photo or video?

No. The only movie setting are described on page 91 of your manual and B&W is not an option.

Change the video when you edit.

That would be totally unwise!

And you can't on the D3200. You ask now "So how do they do it" well they use video editing software. And there apply a B&W filter over the footage. That way you have the original source for if you want to use color.

Odd not how an entry level model does has filters for pictures but doesn't for video.

The issue for pictures it is a nice addition for many. But video is a whole other thing, I question how quickly will the batteries go down if it has to film with 1 or 2 filters over the video signal. Wouldn't it be nice to combine a B&W filter with a 12 FPS or eve 6FPS film mode.

But we do that in software after shooting the video really. That way you have the most flexibility, maybe later you think "mmm I wish I had shot in color" Or "That 6 FPS mode is cute but I wish I had shot at 30 FPS"

It is easier to get the best quality first and later "downgrade" to the effect you seek.
