Can the Nikon d3100 be used as a camera to shoot during ski season?

I really want to buy the d3100, but I mainly want to use it to take photos and videos while skiing, because it has better quality and resolution than the gopro, etc. I just wasn't sure if the camera would be able to withstand the conditions of the snow and cold weather, any information would help thanks.

The cold will probably shorten battery life, but a spill will wreck it.

It's a useful camera for spectating, but nowhere near tough enough to survive a fall. The GoPro's low performance is the price you pay for its physical strength.

It's going to be awfully heavy and you will have to spend a lot of money for a harness. It probably is not the best idea.

If you want more quality than a GoPro, consider a Nikon AW110, Olympus TG-2, etc. They are compact cameras, ruggedized, and in the case of the TG-2, a relatively fast f/2 lens.

It's not weatherproof so don't expect the battery to last very long. I'd be more confident bringing this one though.
