Can i use the memory card from my Kodak Easy Share in my new Nikon D3100?
The memory card is a Gigaware 4GB
Added (1). Can you explain why you wouldn't be able to?
my room mate says you should be able to
Added (2). It also looks like it would fit, the edges match up.
i just don't want to damage the camera by putting in the wrong memory card
For a DSLR you need to have a card that's fast enough to transfer the pictures to the camera.
That card (unless is says 6 or 10 on the card itself) will be a class 2 or 4 card.
For DSLR photography you need a class 6 or class 10 card. (This only applys to SD cards)
The D3100 takes SD and SDHC cards. If your kodak camera uses SD cards, it will fit in the D3100.
You will know if the card will not fit. No two cards are alike, except the small cellphone memory cards (like micro SD cards and M5 cards, etc)
as for the class of the card, that you want to check on. I recommend a Class 6 if you are only going to do pictures, but if you are going to do video, a class 10 card should fare much better, as the write speeds are faster and the camera won't have to stop and buffer.
Your 4GB SDHC Gigaware memory card will fit perfectly in your new dSLR… HOWEVER… It's most likely only a Class 2 memory card (look on the front of the card for a number encircled by a C).
If it's only Class 2… Then you will NEED to buy a new and faster card, as it will be far too slow. This type of slow, standard card is ok to use in a simple point and shoot camera, but it's much too slow to use in a dSLR camera.
You will need to buy a fast class 6 card at the very least, and ideally you would want a Class 10 card, if recording Full HD movies.
Page 20 of your Reference Manual shows you how to insert the memory card and page 21 shows you how to Format it (which you must do prior to first using your new card).
If it's the same sort of card, then yes - it will work.
Not sure what sort of card you have (you don't say), but I have used my old compact flash card (256 megabytes) for my point and shoot camera on my dSLR with no problem.
