Can I use the Aperture Ring on my 50mm 1.8D Lens with my Nikon D50?

I recently bought a Nikon 50mm AF f/1.8D lens and I put it on my Nikon d50 and when I try and manually change the aperture i get an FEE error.

Can I only use the camera to modify the aperture and not manually do it through the ring on the lens.

I have read that i have to have the lens set to f22 and have it locked which allows it to work. But i intended to use this manually through the ring on the lens…

It is kind of frustrating.

Well I don't know. On the old film slr cameras that was the only way to adjust aperture. But with digital cameras, they're semi-automatic when in manual mode. Normally you have to set the aperture through the camera.

Yes, there's a way of using the aperture ring, and that's in "M" mode, but it also means that you lose metering on the camera, meaning the only way to get your pictures properly exposed is by guessing which aperture/shutter speed combination.

Personally, I'd rather control aperture by using the camera body rather than face the incovenience of a useless meter, but you may feel differently about it.

Have fun, and good luck.

Set to Manual mode first if you intend to use the aperture ring. You can also set aperture using the wheel on other modes but you should leave the aperture ring set to the highest f/number. Read the manual on how to go about this.

You'd need a d200 or better to use the aperture ring. The lower bodies you'll need to use the wheel at the back just like the rest of us or mess about in full manual
