I've had my nikon d5100 for a while and was planning to upgrade. I have my eyes set on the nikon d610. I was wondering if can i use my nikon d5100 lenses for nikon d610? If not, what other cameras can you suggest I can upgrade to to be able to use my old lenses?

I use the D5100 a fair bit of the time… If I need extra performance or spec I use a D7100… I've just picked up a D7000 to add to the collection.

I don't need full-frame… I doubt you do too, if you need to ask questions about compatibility with lenses when changing between crop sensor and full-frame cameras… Here's a link to Nikon USA that explains everything:

You CAN us your D5100 lens on any full-framed Nikon DSLR like the D610. But the new camera will automatically switch over to DX (crop sensor) mode, as that all the area of the sensor that all DX lenses will cover.

If you want a smoother upgrade path, I'd recommend a D7100. Currently, my D7100 is my camera of choice and I leave several other Nikons back at home when shooting. Besides being a top-level DX camera, it has an internal autofocus motor, allowing you to us All autofocus lenses, not just AF-S models. You can also meter with older non-AF lenses as well.

If you can't answer this for yourself, you'd be wasting money on a D610

As others have pointed out, you can put the Nikon DX lenses on the FX body, but you don't get the full use of the lovely FX sensor. To do that, you would need to invest in FX lenses--a cost on money and weight. You need to think through whether that will be worthwhile.

I agree that you may not need a full frame camera and of course all the Nikkor AF and AF-S lenses will work just fine on the Nikon F610, whether the lens is a DX or FX

I shoot a lot of sports and as such use long lenses.

Here is what I face from time to time.

Do I need to use my D3 with the nearly $10,000, nearly 10 pound 400 mm f/2.8 lens or can I get quality images using my D300 and the less than $5,000, 6 pound 300 mm f/2.8 lens? The extra "reach" I have with the D300 makes a big difference. And let me tell you, that extra four pounds can wear on me after the third quarter of the football game. Its added mass also makes it more difficult to pan the action and change the direction of the pan as the plays develop.

It is your money, so spend it as you like.
