Can I use creative light studio on the sb-600 from Nikon d5100?

A friend gave me a sb-600 speed light. ( is it any good?) will the cls work on my Nikon d5100?

Yes and no.
The D5100 can host a CLS commander, but its built in flash can't - unlike that of e.g. The D90.
This means that you'd need another CLS flash that can act in commander mode such as the SB-800 to control a SB-600 wirelessly with the D5100.
Quite pointless in my opinion.

Creative Light SYSTEM. Not studio.
The SB-600 is a good flash, but your camera has no flash controller built in, so you are limited to using it in the hot shoe, or purchasing a controller.
