Can I use a Nikon AF lens on a Nikon d5100?

quoted from the site I want to purchase from. I have the newer D5100 and it doesn't say specifically d5100, it just says d5000. Do the d5000 just lump all 5000 series cameras?

I'm wondering because the AF-S is 110 dollars more expensive and if I get an AF and mine requires AF-S the Auto Focus won't work. Not that I use the Auto Focus very often, but I'm paying hard earned and saved money for something that works dangit! Plus my husband sometimes picks the camera up and auto focus is all he knows.

Added (1). Hrm, well crud. I'll have to wait for the site to have the AF-S lens in stock then. And cough up the extra money. That's a bummer.

Here's a full list of the lenses that autofocus on Nikon's entry-level DSLR's like your D5100.

Autofocus will not work for AF lenses on your camera.

If you look in your manual for compatible lenses, near the back under optional equipment, it should state that you do not have the ability to autofocus those lenses.

And you can confirm that by looking at your camera's mounting ring. You will not see the motor drive jack screw, which means you have no autofocus motor in the camera.

The photo below will show you how to identify and confirm whether or not your camera has the jack-shaft required to focus AF lenses.

---UPDATE---

Well, you can still buy AF lenses and manually focus them. This solves three purposes;

1. You can buy the AF lens now.
2. You can look to the future when you up-scale your camera to a mid-level Nikon.
3. Your husband will not be using your camera.

To keep the initial price low, Nikon didn't put a focusing motor in the camera body of their entry-level DSLR cameras like the D40, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000 and D5100.So you initially saved money but now Nikon is getting it back by requiring use of the more expensive AF-S lenses which will auto focus on those entry-level models.
