Filling a 16 gb card without copying your images to you computer is just asking for a disaster
The common practice among seasoned users of digital cameras is to down load all their images from a shoot at the end of the day and then once they are safely on the computer, format the card using the format feature on the camera.
With a the 6 mp D40, you can carry two freshly formatted 2 gb cards and use the second on if you happen to fill the first (a rare day of shooting for sure)
Do you have any idea of how long it would take to copy a full '16 gb card to your computer using the USB cord on your camera?
Your D40 camera is able to use SDHC cards, so in theory, a 16 gb card would work.
