Its usually better just to insert the memory card into your computer via card reader, whether it is built in or USB. It has a faster transfer rate and is safer.

Dr. Iblis is right.

Those of us who have been using digital cameras, long ago stopped using the camera to computer SUB cord and use a card reader exclusively.

Most of us regulars here use and recommend usb card readers for upload. They're not expensive and are available where ever cameras are sold. I've been using them for years.

Another one to chime in with CARD READER. Get a card reader they are about $6.00 for the individual size, which today is most likely an "sd"… If you think you might have use for the other size cards in the future, you might consider a multicard reader @ $10-$12.00.
Oh and to answer your D3100 directly to your computer, the answer as you have probably guessed is no unless your computer is very recent and has a card reader built-in usually only the SD size.
For your own piece of mind, don't use the cords usually packaged with cameras for this purpose. Get a card reader, or you will find yourself seeking tranquillizers!
