See the site of the manufacturer they say if it is compatible or go to your local store with your camera usually they let you test it.

Those independent brand lenses (Tamron and Sigma are both good) are made with mounts to fit all the well-known brands, so you need to buy with a mount suitable for your camera. Check if those lenses have internal focus motors, or if your D5100 has a focus motor.
