Camera sensor exposed to the sun?

Is the sensor of the camera exposed when focusing?
because i've just taken a picture of a sun (about 4.30 pm and the sun covered with clouds… My eyes hurt a bit though) and they said that camera sensor and sun are not good friends… Will it damage the camera? Btw, i used the Nikon D3100 with a UV filter…

Avoid looking at the sun… It's bad for your eyes…

The sensor isn't but your eyes were. You should be more concerned about your eyes then your sensor.
Next time, hold down the depth of field preview button when you look through the viewfinder to stop down the lens making it less dangerous to look at.
Exposing the sensor to the sun will not hurt it.
