Brands of External Flash for Nikon D60?
I recently purchased a used Nikon D60, and would like to supplement the weak on-board flash with an external, more powerful, flash. However, I've read that there are flashes less expensive than the Nikon brand that are just as good. What are they?
Vivitar, Yung Nuo, Promaster. Just make sure you get one with a Nikon hot shoe.
There's no "Nikon" hot shoe. There's the standard ISO hot shoe with Nikon TTL connectors, but you don't have to use them. Any manual, auto-thyristor, or flash body with Nikon iTTL will work.
If you want as good as the Nikon stuff for less money, your best choice is Metz. Their 48-AF1 is more powerful than the SB-600 and has more bells and whistles. It is also cheaper, at about $225. The Sigma 530 DG Super runs about this price as well. It has a little brother, the 530 DG ST without as many bells and whistles, at $150.
Yongnuo is now making an (alleged) Nikon iTTL flash… EBay only, and it comes from Hong Kong, but it is less than $100.
Also to add on to the rest of the answers, Nissin also makes good 3rd party flash for Nikon.
I'll second Nissin!
Not sure if they're available in the 'States but I use the Nissin Di 622, which does everything I need, I just couldn't justify the price of the Nikon 600, in other words, I couldn't afford it:-)
(There's a just-released Di 622 Mark 2, which is a bit more expensive, but still plenty of Mark 1's around)
If you are on a tight budget, the Nissin range is a good alternative and is compatible with the D60
