One kit lens that sometimes comes with the D7000 is the 18-140mm. That would be a good travel lens. Even the 18-55mm would be OK, you would have to use your feet to do some of the zooming.

I agree with 18-140mm. 18-55mm sometimes seems too little. More zoom range than 18-140mm is sometimes useful, but it sacrifices image quality.

Personally, I like and travel with the Nikon 18-300mm VR lens. It's a great "all-purpose" lens that doesn't require swapping lens for different situations. The 18-200mm would also be a good choice -- a bit smaller and less expensive.

I'll go with the 18-140mm. It is smaller and lighter than the 18-200 which makes traveling with the lens easier. The lens is very sharp but does suffer from pretty bad distortion. Architectural images will need to be corrected if you want straight edges unless you shoot at 24mm. Easy to correct in Photoshop or Lightroom. BTW, all wide-range zoom lenses have nasty distortion.

I use this lens for my travels which includes conventional travel to going in to the bush for 2 to 4 week trips. I find the focal range perfect for most of my shots, although having a wider angle lens is sometimes needed. If you're going to an area where you're shooting indoor architecture, you might consider something like the Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 lens. I've been impressed by the images this lens produces for those occasions where you need wide angle coverage.

I found the 18-55mm to be too limited for my purposes, plus, the image quality is poorer than the 18-140mm due to the fine pixel pitch on the D7000.

I stand by the 18-55mm kit lens.
