I just purchased a nikon d90, and i don't like the color, so which settings for family portraits? I would love the color to be bright and vibrant.

I have found that the Standard picture control does give awful skin tones on my D90.
Go to the Shooting Menu (camera icon). Set picture control. Change to Portrait.
I think you will find it to be a significant improvement for portraits and for general use. You might need to tinker with the brightness levels in software to make your contrast look more snappy, but that is much easier to do than trying to fix magenta faces. Color saturation is also easy to tinker with in software. It's the hue that can drive you crazy, especially with skintone, if the camera didn't get it right.

There's no such thing as best setting. You'll have to figure it out depending on the situation. The main factor is the quality and amount of available light. You base all the settings from there. Here. Teach yourself.
