Best nikon lens for bokeh?

Stephanie

I have a nikon D5100 and want a good lens for bokeh (most photographers should know what that means) and I would like to see if there are any lens that are possibly under $500? (i'm young [14] and love photography) ALSO can you send me a link to it?

Bokeh is a term that has come to be generic for DOF. Here's a good article on the subject so you understand it better. You'll be able to read it after Wikipedia comes back up after their little protest.

First understand that there's no "best" lens, at least not in my opinion. If you know how to operate the lens you have you can achieve a short DOF with any lens. Yes there are those that will go shorter than the one you have but I don't think you have to invest in anything special to get the effect.
Here's an example of what I mean. This I shot with my Canon t1i with my Canon 28-200 lens.

The point is, as I said, if you know how to properly operate any lens you can get there.

As Jim said, you can get pretty good bokeh with your kit lens, opened wide to it's fasted aperture and set for it's longest focal length.

But if you want to go to the next level, look at the 50mm f/1.8 AF-G or the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S. Both are excellent portrait lenses that will give you that creamy artistic blur of the background and foreground, while giving you a crisp image of your subject.

For $500, you actually could get both.
