Best inexpensive DSLR lens?
So i'm planning on getting a Nikon D3100 as my first DSLR: D
but, however, the lens is already comes with aren't the best.
i want one that's either standard zoom or wide angle, either or…
with a budget of under $200 or under $230
and the brand doesn't have to be nikon.
You must not have been looking on line to see what these cameras cost.
The 18-55 mm lens is a great lens for learning how to use your camera.
If you want to replace it with a better lens, the 17-55 mm f/2.8 lens costs $1, 540
A wide angle lens, the 10-24 mm costs $900
Where did you come up with the figures of $200 or $230.Is that what you have in your piggy bank at present?
Here is a list of all the lenses Nikon makes. Look for AF-S lenses that will auto-focus with your lens
Even infirror generic lenses in those focal lengths cost far more than $250
Me thinks you have not done much research before asking this question
The Nikon kit lenses, be it the 18-55mm VR or 18-105mm VR, are pretty much the best value for money that you can get. True, there are better ones available, but these cost at least about $400.
So… Stick to the kit lens, and buy a new one if you actually find it to be lacking. Odds are that your first concern won't be the optical quality of the kit lens though, but what you can do with it. Then, long before you replace your kit lens, you'll likely buy e.g. A telephoto lens, an ultra wide angle or a nice fast 35mm or 50mm prime.
The best and inexpensive Nikon lens - disregarding it's purpose - is the Nikon 50mm f/1.8, which can be purchased for about $120. But it is a prime - not a zoom lens.
It is an incredible value for that price.
However, you can't use that lens if you want to autofocus, as it does not have a built-in motor, and your camera, being an entry level camera does not have the required motor in the camera (which this lens requires for autofocus).
You can also buy a Nikon AF-S 35mm DX f/1.8 lens for $200 if you look hard enough. But most vendors are charging up to $250 for it. This lens WILL focus on your camera as it has the required AF-S motor in the lens.
Here is a source where you can get it for $200.

Again, these are not zoom lenses, but high-quality prime (single focal length) lenses.
There's no such thing as a standard zoom or wide angle.
There's nothing wrong with the kit lens that comes with that camera. People who buy DSLRs and are unable to take decent photos like to blame the lens. The kit lens that these entry level DSLRs come with are more than capable of taking decent shots. If you can't take decent shots with one of those, then you will toil to be able to do so with a more expensive lens.
With $200 you might be able to buy a half decent 50mm prime lens. Something like this comes to mind: http://www.google.co.uk/...CEEQ8wIwAA - remember you need an AF-S lens if you want it to autofocus. Forget quality zoom lenses - they are way out of your budget.
