Took camera to shop to verify the problem -- connection has been failing for a few weeks. Camera is 5 years old… Don't know it is cost effective to repair or should I buy a new camera

According to what I just read to replace this camera would be over $800. Since you didn't mention how much the repair bill would be - even if it's a couple of hundred I think it would be worth it.

And you did try another battery to confirm.

This is a fairly simple repair. You can call nikon, I'd be surprised if the costs exceed 150 euros. That does not buy a new camera. On the other hand, if it's 5 years old I can imagine you wanting to get a D90 or a d7000.

If you do decide to replace it don't toss it out, sell it on ebay, it has worth for the spare parts alone.

You already took the camera to the shop. Didn't you ask how much it would cost? Being 5 years old isn't really much of a problem but if you're looking for a reason to replace it, now is the time. Lucky is the next owner of your camera.
