Yes they are good, excellent in fact

Unless you know now they are used, you may want to take a class or two in photography. Spending nearly $3, 000 on lenses, not knowing how to use them is a little premature

Here is a link that will show you each lenses field of view

70-200 mm f/2.8 is one of the lenses used by editorial and sports photographers

The 50 mm is a medium telephoto lens, used as a portrait lens

Each of those lenses has its purpose

the 70-200 mm is used at sports games a lot because of the 700 mm zoom and it also allows shooting in low light with the aperture of 2.8.

the 50 mm is a common lens because thats what your eye is set at so pictures would appear exactly what people see with there eyes. It also has a low aperture and can be used in low light. This lens is commonly used at weddings and other events.

They are both excellent lenses but as you have no idea what you would use them for then you don't need them.

Before you go spending a lot of money on equipment which you have no idea about, you would be better off spending a few pounds/dollars on a decent book on photography and learning the trade.

Then you know what you are doing and what different lenses are used for you can get what you need not what looks good.

Both are good, like other people mentioned the 70 -200 is more of a zoom. Good for sport/wildlife anything you wanna get up close to, I used a similar lens for an ANZAC parade n i was pretty happy with the results. I have a 50mm f1.4 for my nikon and I use it for food photography mostly, fantastic for anything that requires short DOF, portraits, still life etc.
VR is vibration reduction or something along those lines, which is good for your 70-200 as it will help reduce camera shake and make your photos a little crisper as you can loose a little quality with lenes with such a wide range.
I have seen alot of photographers use lenses for things you would never think to use them for. Don't be restricted by what is written in the books. Have fun with them, experiment!

The 70-200 ED is one of the optically fine lenses in its range. It's a tad heavy but on a tripod will shoot superb landscapes. The VR version (mine is non-VR) gives you some handheld flexibility - though I have to admit that in the last few years I've stopped shooting VR lenses entirely.

The 50 f/1.4 is also a superb lens and is my choice for low light where its focal length (medium landscape, portrait) suits my need.
