Accessories for the D3100?

I just got the D3100 a few weeks ago and am loving it. This is my first dslr, but I've played with some in the past.
Anyways, I'm wondering what kind of accessories I should buy for it.
I'm looking at getting a battery grip for it and some off brand batteries. I've been told that the batteries can be used with the battery grip, but will not work if you just put them into the camera itself.
I got a tripod, which is more than 10 years old. Should I get a new one?
I'm also looking for some flashes, but all the Nikon ones are pretty expensive. I was given an old Canon flash. Will that work with my d3100?
What other accessories should I get?

Added (1). The Nikon battery for the D3100 costs about $50.
The battery grip and off brand battery costs about $38.
You can't use the off brand battery without the grip.
I was just wondering if I should get the grip and off brand for cheaper or get the genuine Nikon one.

Added (2). Edit 2: Nikon does not make a grip for the Nikon D3100. I have to get from Neewer, which makes an aftermarket grip.

Don't worry about getting more stuff. Just go out an shoot. If your tripod works then you don't nee a new one. I wouldn't waste money on a flash. You don't need a battery pack, justa spare battery. Spend your time and money on improving not buying stuff.

If your tripod works - keep it. Mine's probably older than you, but I know what it can do.

The flash probably won't work.

Get a spare battery (and a couple more SD cards for) now, you can save up for other accessories when you have a clearer picture of what you need.

Skip on the battery grip and use that money to buy a second genuine Nikon battery. Don't fool with aftermarket batteries as they can potentially damage your charger or leak.

It takes about 10 seconds to swap batteries, and all you need to do is carry a second battery in your camera bag.

Be sure that anything that connects electrically or electronically to your camera is Nikon own brand. That incldes batteries, battery grips, flashguns. Lenses are a little different - there are good ones available.

I have a battery grip not for extra battery life but because I like the extra size to wrap my hands around to get a steadier hold. The extra controls for portrait mode are especially helpful. But at $38 including batteries (or without) you are buying cheap carp that puts your camera at risk.

A canon flashgun is designed to integrate with Canon camera electronics, Nikon make guns to integrate with theirs. You can't put a Ford gearbox in a VW - you can't use a Canon flash on a Nikon!
