A decision between Canon D50 and the Nikon D7000?

So I've done research and narrowed my choices to either the Canon D50 or the Nikon D7000; money is not really an issue so I'm flexible in going with any of the two mentioned. Although I'm a bit more inclined to the D7000, I just want some outside perspective as to which one would be more suitable in a more universal way, other then the generic "me knowing myself the most" kind of deal.

I'm not a "professional" but neither am I someone who takes pictures at weddings or sporting events and call it a "photo shoot". I take it rather seriously but again, I'm not what someone would call "professional". I've been shooting with the Canon G10 for about 2 and a half years and I do have some experiences.

I would pick up the D7000 unless I already had some canon lenses. While the 50D is a nice semi pro camera, the D7000 outclasses it by simply being 2 years newer. You can see a listing here of their features in comparison.

Basically the Nikon has more megapixels, higher ISO, better white balance, better metering, better exposure controls, is a smaller camera, and has a HD video mode. A more appropriate comparison would be the newly introduced Canon 60D which is fairly close in price and specs to the D7000.

Please remember that it is just not about the specs. Quality lenses and ergonomic make a huge difference when actually shooting. I would find a store that has these cameras on display and handle them for a bit.

You may also want to consider

More Expensive

Canon 7D
Pentax k5

Less expensive

Canon T2i
Nikon D90 or D3100
Pentax Kr
Sony A55

All of these are good cameras as well that have some interesting features.

Nikon D7000.
Because it has got faster burst rate, 16.1MP sensor, new fast processor and most of all better camera sensor rankings than 50D.

I'd lean towards the nikon as well, partially because it's nikon and I like the brand, partially because you get at least an extra stop of useable high iso with the nikon.

I think it's time to do a hand holding test, handle them both and see whuch is nicest for you

You mean Canon EOS 50D, not D50.

The D7000 is competing with the 60D, and cause the 50D is 2.5 years old, it's not a fair comparison.

The D7000 has less noise, higher ISO range, better AF while recording videos but worse frame rates, it's built better and faster. Image Quality = 100% the same, while we're under ISO 1600 of course.
