And now when I take pictures, I look through the lens and its faded, but it takes pictures. But they turn out half blacked out? What happened? Is it my lens or my camera?

Contact Nikon for a repair estimate - it won't be cheap.

Now you know what straps are for.

What happened to your neck strap that Nikon was so thoughtful to provide you?

You seriously damaged your camera, possibly the shutter, maybe the mirror. Who knows?

Call Nikon and they will tell you how to return it for repair.

Dropping a DSLR, wow! Send the camera to Nikon address in your instruction book. Give an explanation of how the camera reacts, might as well tell them the problems and that it was dropped as they can tell immediately when they open the camera. Be sure to ask for an estimate as the repair could possibly be more than either you want to spend, or not worth repairing (this is typical of dropping digital cameras).
Include Name, address, and daytime phone number and email address. Camera name, model number, and serial number.
