You will definitely find online sellers offering it at a much lower price. The difference is service. I'm not actually sure with Best Buy (since I'm not from where you are) but if you can find a more reputable store that specializes in cameras near your place and if they are an authorized Nikon distributor or reseller then that's where you should buy.

It's not always about getting the lowest price. Take note that Nikon has very strict distributor territories and if your Nikon breaks down, warranty will only be entertained in the area of distributorship where you bought the camera. Elsewhere, it will be regarded as a gray unit. You will have to spend more to get your camera to the service center of the store you bought the camera from or worse to an offshore international service center. It is best to buy nearby and more importantly from a trusted store.

If you live in the right State, ordering on line will save you the sales tax in your State, but you need to consider the cost of shipping into the total cost

You will undoubtedly get much better offers online. And by far the safest and cheapest option to go with is amazon. I recently purchased my camera from amazon and I love everything about their shipping. Don't forget to get accessories so it all ships together. I'll provide you a link, its actually one of the best selling cameras on amazon. Good luck and happy picture taking!

Not in the US.

Nikon cameras (as well as many other brands) are sold under something called "Universal Pricing". This means the cameras are sold at MSRP or whatever Nikon sets. Any dealer caught selling the camera for less will forfeit their US dealership.

Nikon has been very aggressive at this as it protects their dealers from people that "windowshop" at their local retailer, then try to find a cheaper price on-line.

When prices are less - at least in the US, it's only because Nikon has either announced a rebate, or the cameras have been discontinued, which usually makes the retailer free to sell at a different price. In that regard, you may find a D5100 for less on-line as it is not the current model.

Also, while you can save a bit in sales tax up front - realize that almost every state in the US require you to pay a "Use Tax", for any on-line purchases you make that you did not pay tax on. This is required every year when you file your state tax returns. Failure to do so can subject you to fines. Many people do not do this, and some are not even aware of it - but since the states are losing money, they are becoming more aggressive in collecting these taxes and penalties.

The only other situation you may find where the price is less on line is for grey market items, or if the retailer is not an authorized Nikon reseller - but is getting product from some other source than the US Nikon distributor.
