I think they are nearly the same high quality, Nikon's lenses are more pricey so I would recommend to buy a Canon one.
To answer, there are more Canons actually on the market!

If you compare like to like then quality between Nikon and Canon lenses is pretty much equal on average though they may trade best's between specific lenses.

Canon has a wider range than Nikon

Sorry guys, check your facts.

The current Nikon catalog shows 74 Nikon lenses.

The current Canon catalog shows 68 Canon lenses.

Teleconverters are not included in the above lens counts.

Nikon has produced 65 million lenses for the F-Mount since 1959.

Canon changed their mount in the early 80's from the prior FD mount to the current EF mount, so the number of lenses they have produced that are compatible with current cameras are much less.

And this does not include the 3rd party lens offerings from Tokina, Sigma, Tamron, and others.

Also, you can buy a few Ziess lenses for Nikon - not sure if they make any for Canon or not.

At any rate, I'm not thinking you would be lacking for lenses regardless of which brand you choose.

Both brands have more lenses than mere mortals could afford, if they wanted to buy every lens in either catalogue. So, if lens choice is your criterion, you need to define the sort of photography that is most important to you, and search through each catalogue for the most suitable choices of lenses. Don't forget that Canon sensors come in three sizes, with ratios of 1:1, 1:1.3, or 1:1.6 compared with 'full frame'. Nikons have ratios of 1:1 or 1:1.5.

Fords & Chevy's… For the average person, Nikon or Canon will be fine. Both put out quality products.

Yes Nikon has much more variety of lenses because you can still use lenses made back in the 1959, and they don't use fragile fluorite glass.
