Do you need an expensive camera to take decent looking photos?

I want to take some great photos to put online to sell clothing but I can't afford an expensive camera. Can I take decent photos with a cheaper camera?

Added (1). Can anyone recommend a cheaper camera that would be good for this purpose like selling stuff on Ebay?

No, you just need to know the tricks. But an expensive camera would help.

NO but you have to take lots of pictures to get the best one.
in college they let me use a camra that if they move fast
I can take the picture of them as though they were not moving fast.

Nope.

I can use a little $800 dSLR to shoot any of my assignments, but I can't expect it to last seven years under the pounding I give my $5,300 Nikon D3.

Since all fully adjustable cameras work just the same, the photographer balancing ISO, shutter speed and lens aperture to produce brilliant images, it does not matter which one you pick really, just as long as the system has all the lenses you may need to shoot your subjects

It is NOT about the camera, but the skills and experience of the photographer… You can't buy that

I have seen some UNBELIEVABLE pictures taken from peoples cell phones and NOT your expensive ones either! You can also take great pictures using an ipad and other forms of tech.
A Kodak EasyShare is the camera I have and it takes great pictures also! You can go on Ebay and look for a good camera also as there are many with high pixels.
You know how much you can afford so it's your call but many times you get what you pay for and you want something durable that will stand the test of time and not die in quick time after a few pics.

Just about any camera will be good enough to take pictures for Ebay.

Ken Rockwell recommends the Nikon 3100 as a low cost, excellent camera.

If you have a cell phone with at least a 2 to 3 megapixel camera, that is more than enough.

It's not the camera, it. The guy weilding it. Cheaper cameras do have more limitations that even an entry level DSLR but ou CAN get good results with even a cheap camera as long as oyu have the skills to overcome the cameras limitations.

DigitalRev has this series called "Pro Photog, Cheap Camera" where they hand some of the most ridiculous cameras (a lego camera, buzz lightyear camera…) to well known photogrpahers (Chase Jarvis, David Hobby…) and challenge them to create memorable images.

The whole series is available on YouTube and is well worth a watch.

Fstopper.com also did an entire model shoot with only an Iphone3 and LOTS of light.

To do some product shots for web use only a cheap arsed point and shoot or even a cellphone can do but you might want to invest a little on an entry level DSLR like a Nikon D3200 or a Canon T3.

For clothing shots, this is what I would recommend.

- 1 DSLR (Canon T3 or even a used Rebel T1i or XSi) with a kit 18-55 lens. (300$-500$)
- 1 Tripod: 15$ to 50$
- 3 clamp worklights (10$ each)
- 1 white sheet or a pure white wall
- 3 CFL bulbs (400W equivalent each: 20$ each)

You might need some lightstands of similar to hang the clamp lights. (12$ each or build your own).
You might also need a manikin (10$ to 200$) if you don;t have a suck… Er a volounteer to model the clothing.

I recommend a DSLR because you can control the settings allowing you to really maximize the image quality to compensate for the low light.
