The competition for the Nikon D5200 is the Canon 700D/T5i.

As long as you are starting out with a new camera system you can buy Nikkor AF-S lenses and they will auto-focus when shooting still as well as when using live view to shoot video.

The built-in motors on cameras actually focus slower than when you are using a camera with an ultra-sonic in lens auto-focus motor.

Nikon calls theirs, Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables ultra-high speed auto focusing and Canon calls theirs, USM (UltraSonic Motor)

These in lens auto-focus motors are designed to not only focus faster, but create more accurate focus, especially when using a technique called "follow focus" used by sports and wildlife photographers.

In reality, it is rare that auto-focus is used when shooting video. Instead, the videographer uses a special rig on their camera to allow them to "pull focus" in much the same way the assistant director of photography does when shooting motion picture.

If you want an auto-focus video camera, spend $250 and buy a camcorder. The can shoot both HD and Full HD video and some actually have built-in interval timers (for shooting time lapse video) and motion detectors that can be used when shooting things like birds taking care of their young.

Both the Nikon D5200 and older Canon 600D can auto-focus when using them to shoot video, but really you are stretching the envelop if your real goal is to shoot video.

Before you spend a dime on a dSLR with the intent of shooting video, you need to spend some time on these links.

And finally, so you can get a better grasp on what it costs to set up a dSLR to shoot video, this link will help you.

I'm sure you are aware that you also need a super fast computer, with a good basic video and audio editing program.

You will probably notice that it is recommended that you use an external sound recording device to provide you with the best possible audio. You can find a Zoom H1 recorder for under $100 and a shotgun microphone for under $50 which in combination will provide you with excellent audio.

Here is a link to the first of a series of tutorials on producing good audio from theUSC Annenberg Radio Production Department. The skills taught in these tutorials, are applicable to video and film as well.

Nikon puts the autofocus motor in their D7xxxx, D4, and Dr higher level DSLRs. The entry-level D3xxx and D5xxx cameras do not and require lenses with AF motors in them.

But absolutely none of Canon's.DSLRs have. The AF motor in the body.
