Do I zoom with the camera or do I have to adjust the lens manually?
I'm a newbie and just bought my first DSLR. I'm confused on how to use my zoom lens. First, let me say I bought the Nikon D5200 with the 18-55 mm kit lens. I have been trying to figure out how to zoom the lens and I'm just not sure if there's a way to do it automatically with the camera or if I have to adjust it manually. I'm learning as I go, but this will help a lot if I can figure this one thing out. Any help is greatly appreciated!
You have to adjust the lens manually. It will only auto focus.
They gave you that 175 page owners manual for a reason. Read it!
With any DSLR you have to manually turn the zoom ring to make it zoom. If you're used to automatic zoom on your point-and-shoot camera, this may seem counter-intuitive at first, but believe me, it's much better.
You'll find a ring on your 18-55 lens that will allow the lens to zoom. Just turn it.
You have to use your left hand. Put it on the zoom control ring and gently twist it.
I think you mean is there a motor drive on the camera to make the zoom change focal lengths. NO it does not. You have a fully adjustable camera now and you need to read your cameras user manual to take control of your camera.
The first thing you need to learn is how to balance ISO, shutter speed and lens aperture.
