Compatible lens with the Nikon FM10?

I want to get a 35mm SLR soon to try it out before I start photography class at school. But I'm wondering if my 50mm f1.8G AF-S lens will be compatible with the film slr?

Good thinking on being prepared Hannah!

Unfortunately this lens does not have a manual aperture ring so it's not compatible with the FM-10.

The nicest Nikkor lenses to use with the FM-10 are AI or AIS. These lenses are made mostly of metal and most have excellent optics. Many of the best lenses Nikon ever made are in AI or AIS.

You can also use pre-AI (sometymes called non-AI,) E Series and AF lenses.

When using AF lenses, you will not have auto focus or auto aperture but these lenses of course can be used with their auto features on a DSLR or more advanced Nikon 35mm SLR. I don't recommend using pre-AI lenses on the FM10 because you will have to use what is called "stop down metering." It's good to know you can use pre-AI lenses too though, if you find one for a good price.

E Series are the cheapest Nikon lenses you can use. They are made mostly of plastic but have reasonably good optics.

Here is a link to the types of Nikkor lens mounts and what cameras they fit. Use the Nikon FM as a reference for the FM10. These cameras have the exact same lens mount but the FM10 is not listed on the chart in this link:

I highly recommend the 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 AIS for your photography class. You can pick them up at KEH.com for very little. And they are MUCH nicer and easier to learn with than the zoom lens that comes with the FM10, so you're on the right track looking for a 50mm!

Enjoy your film class!
