Can the Nikon 50mm do the job of a Nikon 24-70mm?

I'm more inclined to do portraits, for travel, and a bit landscape. Will appreciate your insightful comments because am planning to buy a new lens the soonest.

The difference between a zoom such as the 24-70mm and a 50mm prime is phenomenal. Both are great for certain tasks, but personally if I had to pick only one, for me it would be the zoom! You are not going to get very far trying to take landscape shots with a 50mm prime lens!

What you are asking is if ice cream is better than hot blue berry pie. Both are desserts, but are totally different.

I use my 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens far more than my 50 mm f/1.4 lens In fact I have yet to use my 50 mm lens this year, but the 24-70 mm is constantly on one of my cameras

Both are great but the versatility of a zoom lens makes it more useful… I love the 50mm for portraits, macro and low light but the 24-70 would be used more often… If I had to choose… I would go for versatility unless you have a specific need for the 50mm

For what you want to do, no the 50mm will not get the job done. The 24-70mm is much more useful. For others, like myself, I'd take a fast 50mm. I've got my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 on my dSLR more than any other lens. But the reason is that I shoot in low light, really low light. So being stuck with only f/2.8 as my max aperture would force me to crank the ISO even higher. You didn't mention any low light work, so go with that fine zoom.

I shoot a lot of portraits so my favorite lens is a 50mm f/1.4. You want to shoot different subjects so the zoom would be much better for you.
