Can I charge my Nikon DX camera with a USB cable?

I don't have a charger for my camera. I looked in a lot of stores everywhere for a charger but I can't find one. Can you charge it with a USB cable? If not, where can I find one?

Nikon (and other brand) DSLR's aren't like your iPod. They don't charge from the usb cable. The cable is only used to transfer image data to your computer.

Without knowing what model Nikon DSLR you have we can't help with locating a charger. But you can find original Nikon and 3rd party chargers on Amazon and Ebay. I'd avoid the overseas vendors, as I had problems with a "genuine" Nikon charger bought from them once. It looked right, but none of my batteries fit properly and I didn't have confidence that they were getting a full and safe charge.

There's NO power connection between the USB data port and the battery slot.

Li-ion batteries get hot during charging and must be charged outside the camera.

You need to buy a charger from Nikon. Those charges communicate with the battery during charging to prevent overheating or overcharging. Generic chargers do NOT

You don't have to look everywhere. You only have to ask at an authorized Nikon reseller. They have bold yellow Nikon posters proudly plastered in and out of their stores.

Plugging your camera to your computer using the USB cable actually depletes battery power so beware.
