You're not going to find it for that money. Besides this camera is nothing more than a glorified point and shoot with no view finder (ugh).

If you want real quality you'd better at least double your budget.

Picture quality depends on the user. The camera is only a tool. IF you know what you're doing, you can great decent pictures consistently with any camera. If you don't know photography, get an easy to use tool like one from the Sony Cybershot lineup.

The camera you want doesn't exist for 300 US dollars, sorry. Everyone wants the best, and everyone wants it cheap, I come across it every day here. But, that's not going to happen. The good news is that you don't have to spend a thousand or two thousand bucks.

The nikon J1 is a nice little camera no doubt. The image quality is better than any compact, but that's not saying much because compact cameras are so, so very bad. With the very tiny image sensors they have, and camera makers jamming in more and more pixels to sell people on 'megapixels' the image quality is getting worse not better.

The Nikon 1 series cameras use a larger image sensor, but it's still much smaller that those found in dSLRs.

If you want stunning image quality, better than even some entry level dSLRs go for a Sony NEX C3. For 500- 550 bucks, you'll have a camera with an image sensor better than any entry level Canon dSLR, and even better than some entry level Nikons and Sony Alpha dSLRs. That's the bang for the buck camera right now. Nothing in the same price range can touch it, regardless of the name brand.

So my advice, just keep saving your pennies, because there's nothing for 300 or less that takes a good photo, and that's new. The only way to get into your budget is to by a 4 or 5 year old entry level dSLR.
