I currently have a Nikon d3300 and want to upgrade, I have kit lens and a 40 m prime. Should I buy a mirrorless, new Nikon DX or fx my budget is about 800-1000 dollars. I like to do long expos. Any help helps…

You need to know what your current D3300 is not allowing you to do. Otherwise any money put into an "upgrade" could be for stuff you don't use, don't need, or they could be useful for things other than why you wanted to upgrade in the first place. A very common misconception is that by upgrading your camera body, you will see an improvement in image quality. That's simply not true except for extreme lighting conditions. Your images will not be any sharper or clearer by upgrading the body. Think of the body as the part of the system that provides the control one needs to get the shot. Everything else is either the lens or your technical/artistic know how.

The D3xxx series by Nikon should provide you with enough control to do most types of photography. Where it's not so great is in fast action sports, wildlife, and studio work. Upgrading to a body with more pixels will only benefit those who need to print very large or commonly heavily crop their images. The better sensor in the D5xxx and D7xxx series offers files that have a higher color depth 14 bits vs 12 in the D3xxx seires, which means 4x greater dynamic range and tonality. You won't see this in average shots, but landscapes for example, will greatly benefit from a 14-bit file due the extreme lighting conditions found in landscapes. A 14-bit RAW file (16,000 tones) has a lot more data available when editing. 12-bit files of your D3300 have 4,000 tones.

Another reason to upgrade is the faster and more light sensitive AF system used in the D5xxx and D7xxx allowing for the use of teleconverters for sports and wildlife photographs.

Ok, now with your comment about feeling limiting, we're getting somewhere. The 18-55mm kit lens is fine for a lot of things but not great at any of them. For landscapes a 10-20 would be a great option. For portraits, sports and wildlife, consider something like a 55-250mm lens. Why do you want to upgrade? The camera you have is very good. OK then what lens should I get, wide for landscape, I'm felling limited by the kit lens What do want to do that the D3300 can't do?

The D3300 is a perfectly capable camera and you won't find anything else for $800 or $1000 that will do a noticeably better job. If you are looking to "upgrade" from a D3300, you'll need to add more money to your budget.

Update: There are some lens that are bit wider and a bit faster but it wouldn't be worth the money you would have to spend. How about a nice 18-200mm or 18-300mm "all-purpose" lens so that you don't have carry multiple lens with you? A D5500 would add a few features. I don't know that it's worth upgrading when you already have a D3300, especially since you can't enunciate what features you hope to gain.
Better use of your money would be a good tripod and a good external flash. Maybe eventually saving towards a good telephoto (not a cheapo). With a telephoto lens probably in the future, keep that in mind in getting a very good, medium-heavy duty pan-tilt head, because a front heavy telephoto is difficult to adjust on a light ball head. Your D3300 should be able to do very long exposures at Bulb mode. If you can't get it right with your camera now, you won't either with any other.
