CANNON all the way. I'm a photographer and I really prefer Cannons. There are plenty of great cannons that are under even $1000. Personally, I would recommend the Cannon Rebel T2i.

It really depends on what you value as important. I shoot with a Canon 7D and 5D and a Pentax Kx as a backup for what could damage the canon.

Cannons are things that go Boom!
Nikon DSLRs are generally known for better low-noise performance than Canon.
Nikon cropped DSLRs have larger sensors - about 7% larger. This will result in wide angle lenses being a bit wider, and it might be the reason for better low-light performance.
Which has better quality: you choose.
Nikon may announce new DSLRs in September 2011. Perhaps as early as next week.
