Look no further. The Nikon D3100 is a GREAT first DSLR. It has all the "Bells and whistles" that you need. OK the 18-55vr kit lens is a bit naff that comes with the camera (It will get you going I suppose)
You don't really need 24MP that is fitted to the D3200, It is a marketing ploy to get the innocent to part with extra money.
EDIT. The build quality of the Nikon D3100 body is SLIGHTLY watered down over the Nikon D40 build quality, But if you are not going to clash the camera around and look after it this should not be a real problem. The image quality and the low light performance of the Nikon D3100 is superb, The only downside is there's NOT an external mic socket on the D3100, So you have to use the camera's in built mic which is not all that good for sound quality. So the Nikon D3100 is a good started DSLR (Although not without little faults) But for the money represents great value for money.

Most Nikons that I know of have interchangeable lenses… I'm also 14 and I own a Nikon D5100.It's about $800 (You'll have to convert it to pounds) But the D3100 is also amazing for only $500-$600. Also, I know you want a Nikon but the Cannon Rebel T3 (or T3i) is great! I have a Cannon Rebel (It's a film) and the quality is absolutely stunning!

In the US the prices of the Nikon 3100 and 5100 have dropped recently, with the 5100 being $100 more than the 3100 ($600 vs $500 vs $650 for the 3200). While a nice camera, the 3100 (as well as the new 3200) lacks some nice features of the 5100. The 3100 does not have infrared ports that allow you to use the inexpensive ($20) remote shutter control. The 5100 also has HDR, which I've found can be very handy in certain circumstances. It also has the movable viewing screen which neither the 3100 or 3200 have. The 5100 and 3200 have the VR (image stabilization) on the 18-55 kit lens that the 3100 lens does not have. In short, if there's any way you can come up with the extra dough for the 5100 instead of the 3100, I think you'll be happy you did.

Best buy right now is the Nikon D5100 at Amazon for £400:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/.../letscook/

That is significantly better than the D3100 and should last you quite a few years. It has plenty of advanced features that you can grow into, but is very easy in fully auto for when you just want to snap.

If you know photography then you must understand that any camera will work for you. Your only lead now is brand preference. Knowing that you want Nikon simplifies things further so the only thing left is setting a budget. Now go out and get the most expensive Nikon dSLR you can afford. It's that simple.
