What kind of pictures… > depends on what lens you have attached
I have a V1 and it does take pretty good photos. It is about half-way in between a DSLR and compact camera, and even though it has a smaller sensor, the DxOMark tests (and my personal experience) is that it can hold it's own with M4/3rds cameras, even though it has a smaller sensor.
Someone will criticise the V1 for having a smaller sensor than a M4/3rds camera, however the same is true with Canon APS DSLRs; they have smaller sensors than Nikon APS DSLRs, and no one complains about that.
I bought my V1 last Dec for $299. If you can buy one for that price, it is the best camera you will ever buy for under $300.
Here is a recent photo I took with my V1:
It was taken with a Nikon v1 with a FT-1 adapter and a Nikon AF-S 70-300mm lens. The equivalent focal length was 810mm. The 2.7 crop factor makes this a superior birding camera.
Here is what the scene looked like with a DSLR at 18mm:
Here is the lens setup:
If you can still find a V1 on discount, look for the 2 lens kit, which includes a 10-30mm and 30-110mm lens. The one lens kit only includes the 10-30mm lens. The advantage of the two lens kit is the 30-110mm lens is $150 cheaper in the kit than if you purchase it separately.
