Are point and click cameras distorting compared to DSLRs?
I own a Canon Powershot point and click camera that I take all my photos with. Yesterday, I had to take before and after pictures concerning a surgery and I noticed my face looked different from the doctor's DSLR Nikon camera. Compared to the Canon, my face looked longer and my nose looked smaller and shorter. Do you find point and clicks portray people closer to real life or are DSLRs more accurate?
Lens can create optical distortions, specially wide angle at close distance. Nothing to do with the compact or DSLR version. Distortions are all about angles and distance.
It's not the camera per se, it's lenses that cause distortion.
Wide angle lenses, whether on a DSLR or a point shoot, will distort faces if you are too close. The solution is to stand further away from the subject. If you have a zoom lens use that to frame the shot.
Obviously if you had a DSLR, you would have the option of not using a wide angle lens.
