I have the Canon 50mm f1.8 which i use for portraits and have used it indoors, i use it for gigs and parties and have got some spectacular results. The lens is a great addition to any photographers camera bag and can be used in a variety of situations. I absolutely love mine and would never give it up.

Check out this video from DigitalRev.tv - 5 reasons you need a 50mm lens!

If your using it on a DX camera like a D3000, 3100, 3200, 5000, 5100, D40, D50, D60 ex than you have a DX camera. The 50mm will be like a 75mm on our camera. The 35mm 1.8G will be more like a true 50mm. Its almost as clear as the 50mm 1.8g but its not as clear wide open. The 35mm gets real sharp once you go past F2.

The problem is that Nikon offers a fast zoom lens. The 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX but its 1, 400 lol. Its a great lens but its on the big side and its not something to let kids get a hold of.

Tamron however sells the AF 17-50mm F/2.8 SP XR Di II VC which is $649.It has Vibration reduction and its still considered a fast lens since its able to hold a constant F2.8 though out its focal range. You can take wide angle and medium telephoto shots with the Tamron. Its perfect for indoors and the VC feature will allow you to take pics at slightly slower shutter speeds which will allow you to get more light on every exposure.

As for the Field of view issue. It all depends on how close you are to your subject and how close the back ground is. You'll have to stop down the lens to say F5 to get almost everything in focus. The 50mm 1.8 start to loose sharpness past F6. But since its being used indoors you need all the light you can get if your not using a speed light or the built in flash. (built in flash makes pics look horrible)
