The problem is your "old" lens may not fit a new Nikon dslr camera. Best bet… Go to a proper camera shop and ask them… Have your old camera with you.

Nikon is the most backward compatible company.
If you are saying you have a lens which was used for an older film camera than most probably it will be an f mount lens.
The Nikon F mount goes from 1959 until today. In 1977 they added Auto Indexing as you say and you have to convert a pre-ai lens to AI if you want to use it on a D50, D70, D80 or above Nikon. But on a D40 - D5100, you can mount a pre-AI lens with no problems.

Converting a pre-1977 lens to post 1977 costs around $25 or you can do it yourself. After doing so it will still work on the older cameras.Ai is backwards compatible. Some lenses you have to add an indexing hook to use on an older 1967 body.

But basically with little effort and no adapters Nikon lenses from 1959 until now will work on modern Nikon DSLRs. Just make sure you convert the pre-1977 models for the more expensive DSLRs.
