What is the differences between Nikon lens 18 x 300 and 28 x 300?

My fathers birthday is coming up and be really loves taking pictures and Photoshop and stuff. I always love to surprise my family and friends with there birthday gifts so I asked my mother what she thinks would be a good idea. She said he wants a new lens for his Nikon camera. Either the 18 x 300 or the 28 x 300. He is unsure of which he wants.

So I would like to know what the differences between the two lenses are. I mean there's only a a little differences between the size, one 18 the other 28 so what can one do that the other can't and so on like that.
And because I seem to be a little tight for cash at the moment sadly if anyone knows a good price and or maybe some kind of coupons for one that would be great.

I really appreciate this. I'm the most horrible researcher ever. So anything anybody knows would be a great help!

Here is a link that shows what various focal length lenses see

You seem to be equating binocular that are 8x42 which means that they are an 8x lens with a 42 mm objective

Zoom lenses are 18-200 mm, which indicates the focal length range of the optics

The 18~300 is a DX lens and the 28-300 is a FX lens.

It depends on what kind of camera. If it is a D3xxx, D5xxx, D7xxx, D40~D90, D300 etc. These are all Dx cameras (APS-C sensor) and the 18-300mm (or even the 18-200mm) lens is a more appropriate lens.

If the Camera is a FX camera (full frame) D3, D4, D800, D700, D600, D610 etc. Then you need the 28-300mm lens. While you can use the 28-300 on a Dx camera, you will lose a lot on the wide angle end as it is 28mm vs. 18mm of the 18-300.

In fact the 18-200mm Dx lens (when used on a Dx camera) is equivalent to the 28-300mm Fx lens (when used on a Fx camera).

Fact is - either lens will work on any Nikon DSLR (including the 18-200), but depending on which camera you have, one lens will be better than the other.

Consider the 18-200 if you are shopping for a Dx camera and if you are on a budget. It is a fine lens and less expensive. The difference between 200mm and 300mm - while noticeable, is not significant.

The 18-300mm has longer range (more zoom) than the 28-300mm. In terms of making a distant object seem close to you, they are the same at 300mm but when you are trying to capture something expansive like the Grand Canyon or the whole Golden Gate bridge, 18mm (wide angle) will make it much easier than 28mm (normal/standard).
